Sony has finally unveiled the teaser trailer for The Social Reckoning, the upcoming sequel to Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher’s critically acclaimed The Social Network. Instead of Jesse Eisenberg, who earned an Academy nod for his portrayal of a young Mark Zuckerberg, Jeremy Strong will be taking on the role in the new movie, which chronicles the controversial operations behind Facebook’s practices and is based on the true story detailed in The Facebook Files.

— Sony Pictures (@SonyPictures) June 10, 2026Beyond Strong, who nails the vocal patterns and mannerisms of the real-life Zuckerberg, the teaser also offers glimpses of Mikey Madison’s Frances Haugen, the former Facebook product manager-turned whistleblower, and Jeremy Allen White’s investigative reporter, Jeff Horwitz. With Sorkin pulling double duty as both writer and director this time around, it’ll be interesting to see if he can replicate the heights of the first movie.
What is The Social Reckoning About?
It’s important to note that the Irons-led movie won’t be a direct sequel to The Social Network. Rather, it will chronicle the explosive Wall Street Journal series, The Facebook Files, which led to major congressional hearings and intense public scrutiny of Facebook, now known as Meta. The teaser also sees Zuckerberg preparing himself ahead of the hearing, which was a direct result of the series chronicled by Jeff Horwitz and Frances Haugen, highlighting Facebook’s alleged harmful effects on teens and the spread of misinformation, which critics argue also contributed to political violence.
As for his reasoning behind making this, Sorkin previously stressed (via Variety):
There isn’t a life that Facebook’s algorithm hasn’t touched, and that influence has shaped everything. So it’s time to say more.
Strong also previously commended this movie (via THR), claiming that it was one of the great scripts that he has read and is extremely relevant in the current climate.
Why isn’t Jesse Eisenberg Returning in The Social Network Sequel?
Eisenberg’s absence from the role that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor has nothing to do with the nature of the project, but rather with where he currently stands in his career as an actor.
The Dawn of Justice star suggested that he has outgrown the character at this stage of his career, but remains enthusiastic about what to expect from the movie, assuring fans that Sorkin has another gem up his sleeve (via TODAY).
Listen, for reasons that have nothing to do with how amazing that movie will be, really, truthfully. But when you play a character, you feel, at some point, you’ve grown into something else.
Even though the prospect of Eisenberg not returning to play Zuckerberg is unfortunate at first glance, given Strong’s pedigree as a dramatic performer and everything we have to go by in the teaser, it’s safe to say we’re in for another masterclass from the actor.
