Universal has been pretty cryptic when it comes to the marketing for Steven Spielberg‘s Disclosure Day, which will finally commence its theatrical debut this weekend. Although the decision not to lift the review embargo earlier raised some concerns among fans, the first reactions are finally out, and they are undoubtedly promising, as the movie currently holds an 85% rating on the Tomatometer (as of June 10) and a Metacritic Score of 74 from 47 reviews so far.
Even though these scores are subject to change as more critics chime in once the movie premieres globally, the early buzz surrounding the movie has been largely positive despite the massive expectations Spielberg has set for himself as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
Can Disclosure Day Benefit From Strong Word of Mouth?

As seen with the impressive box office runs of Project Hail Mary and Obsession, word of mouth continues to be a crucial factor when it comes to the long-term prospects of a movie’s theatrical run. And considering Spielberg’s movies tend to skew toward older audiences, Disclosure Day will ultimately rely on walk-up business throughout its run, which could be heavily influenced by audience reception. Fortunately, the early reactions have been largely positive so far, which paints a promising picture for the movie’s box office prospects.
Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman described the movie as an invigorating chase thriller, while noting that it lacks the transcendent awe of Spielberg’s previous classics like Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
IndieWire‘s David Ehrlich, on the flip side, showered the movie with praise, deeming it a giddy alien blockbuster where Spielberg’s signature knack for optimism and human drama shines amid a conspiracy-fueled ride.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s David Rooney labeled the movie a spellbinding return to what Spielberg does best, claiming that it offers a quintessentially Spielbergian experience filled with awe and human drama.
While the initial reviews noted that David Koepp’s screenplay is a bit loose at times and occasionally clashes with Spielberg’s visual genius, they haven’t refrained from calling the movie a true Spielberg blockbuster. Another major common thread across the positive buzz has been Emily Blunt’s performance, which has been described as one of the strongest aspects of the sci-fi epic.
How Much Does Disclosure Day Need to Be Profitable?

Despite being the undisputed king of blockbusters, there have been reasonable concerns surrounding the sci-fi epic. Even though it marks a return to Spielberg’s sci-fi roots, it raises the question of whether the director, who helped champion escapist cinema on the big screen, still possesses the same allure among a new generation of moviegoers.
Although the movie is currently projected to mark a domestic opening closer to $35 million, to its credit, it reportedly boasts a budget of $115 million, placing it on the lower end of major tentpole releases. Variety further stressed that the movie would need to gross around $300-million worldwide to turn a profit, according to rival studio estimates, a figure that doesn’t seem far-fetched if audience reception proves to be stellar.
While no original movie has managed to gross over $500 million since Pixar’s Coco, if the movie manages to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, which is certainly possible given the fascination surrounding disclosure-fueled conspiracies, it would be quite fitting if Spielberg is the one to finally end that drought.
