Marvel’s Wolverine opened this month’s State of Play with a brutal new Extended Gameplay Trailer, which followed Logan pursuing Reavers to save a group of kidnapped mutants. The trailer was not only filled with action and copious amounts of blood, but it was also teeming with hidden details and references to other Wolverine and X-Men media. So, here are 10 things that you missed from Marvel’s Wolverine Extended Gameplay Trailer.
1. The Roxxon Building

During the opening snippets of the new Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay footage, there’s a brief shot of Logan leaping from a rooftop, seemingly in Tokyo. However, what you might have missed is the large Roxxon building on the right. If you weren’t aware, Roxxon was one of the main enemy factions in Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. While it’s confirmed that Wolverine and the Spider-Man games share the same universe, it’s interesting to see it cross over in this manner.
This could suggest that Marvel’s Wolverine is set before Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, or that Roxxon has once again risen to prominence following the defeat and arrest of Simon Krieger.
2. Patch

In the closing moments of Marvel’s Wolverine Extended Gameplay Trailer, there’s a quick shot of Logan dressed in a white tuxedo with an eyepatch, stabbing a Reaver in the neck with this Claws. This confirms that the upcoming game will feature Logan’s “Patch” identity, an alias Wolverine uses in the comics during his undercover operations in Madripoor, a location that’ll be heavily featured in the game.
3. The Mutant Leech

The mutants kidnapped by the Reavers in the new gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine aren’t random. The green mutant kid with a red beanie is Leech, who has appeared in various X-Men comics. He first appeared in Uncanny X-Men, and recently played a prominent role in X-Men ’97 on Disney+.
4. Weapon X Reference

It’s no surprise that Marvel’s Wolverine will reference Weapon X, the experiment that transformed Logan into Wolverine. The ending segment of the new gameplay trailer includes a visual nod to a classic Weapon X TPB cover showing Logan cutting through soldiers inside the facility. In the game, he’s mirroring that composition while brutalizing a group of Reavers.
5. Sabretooth’s Team X Roots

The X-Men do not exist in the world of Marvel’s Wolverine, but Team X will be a thing in the game. Team X was a black ops unit in the comics featuring Wolverine, Sabretooth, Omega Red, Silver Fox, and more members. While not every mutant appearing in the game will be a part of Team X, Sabretooth’s inclusion is pivotal, since he’s also seemingly wearing his Team X outfit from the comics during the ending segment of the Extended Gameplay Trailer. Safe to say, we’ll be seeing more of Team X and Logan’s history with them when the game launches.
6. Ogun

Ogun might not be a major household Wolverine foe like the Silver Samurai or Sabretooth, but he’ll be making an appearance in Marvel’s Wolverine. The villain first appeared in Kitty Pride and Wolverine #2, wearing an enchanted red mask and wielding a sword. In the extended gameplay trailer, there’s a quick shot of Ogun standing in front of flames, wearing his prominent mask with two swords equipped on his back. That’s one more confirmed villain for Marvel’s Wolverine.
7. Skullbuster

Apart from the Sentinels and Sabretooth in Marvel’s Wolverine, the Extended Gameplay Trailer also features a look at another X-Men villain, Skullcrusher. Notice the Reaver with the red face paint? That’s Skullcrusher, and he also locks claws with Wolverine in the truck near the end of the trailer. Skullcrusher first appeared in the Uncanny X-Men comics, and he’s the only named Reaver we meet in the trailer.
8. Ultra-Violent Finishers

Marvel’s Wolverine is already turning out to be an incredibly satisfying gorefest, but what most players missed was one key ultra-violent finisher that Logan performs on a soldier wearing his Classic Brown Suit. At the end of the trailer, right after Sabretooth says, “Some folks can’t wait to die”, there’s a quick shot where Wolverine rips a soldier in half with his Adamantium Claws.
The game was already going to be violent, but seeing Logan rip the guy in half suggests that there will be dismemberment and more violent finishers than we expect. It’s merely a taste, but it’s delicious to get us excited for more.
9. Callisto

Callisto makes a brief appearance in the Extended Gameplay Trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine. She’s one of the mutants being kidnapped by the Reavers in the trailer before Logan pursues them on a bike. If you’re not aware, Callisto is a mutant from the comics, first appearing in The Uncanny X-Men #169, and she seems to play a part in Marvel’s Wolverine, too.
10. Human-Sized Sentinels

Sentinels have always been portrayed as gigantic, mutant-hunting robots, and the case is no different in Marvel’s Wolverine, as we’ve seen from both the original Gameplay Trailer stinger and the Extended one. However, the latter’s sizzle reel featured a first look at a human-sized Sentinel, walking out of a portal with the Reavers. So, players will not only get to fight the gigantic Sentinel, but its mini counterparts will also play a part in making Logan’s life a living hell.
